Spring Cleaning Tips: Exterior of Home
It’s officially spring (even if the weather doesn’t completely feel that way)! This means it’s time for some spring cleaning. Not only is it important for the maintenance of your home, but spring cleaning is the perfect opportunity to renew your space and your spirit. The Philadelphia Contributionship has been writing policies and caring for homes since 1752, and a large part of caring for a home involves understanding its upkeep. To assist, we put together a check list of items to successfully maintain the appearance and functionality of your home.
Have your roof inspected.
It is important to take note of any leaks or loose shingles or metal. The fluctuating temperatures during winter could turn minor cracks into major issues. If you notice any discoloration in your walls or roof, this could be a sign of a leak.
Inspect your windows and doors.
Check your windows and doors for any cracks, holes, or damage to your hinges, frames, and edges. Repair any issues as necessary. Before you swap out your storm panels, inspect your screens and use a screen repair kit to fix holes or tears that bugs can sneak through.
Clean gutters and downspouts.
Make sure to check your gutters for dead leaves and debris that could be weighing them down. Additionally, inspect for any damage caused by ice during the winter. Remove any obstructions, seal up any holes to prevent leaks, and ensure downspouts are directed away from your home's foundation for proper drainage.
Inspect the air conditioning unit.
As the weather warms up, it's important to ensure that your cooling unit is in top condition. Start by removing any debris that may be blocking airflow and change out those old filters. Spring is also the ideal time to schedule a professional HVAC tune-up!
Repair and reseal woodwork.
Inspect all wooden structures such as decks, fences, and railings for water stains, discoloration, and warping. Ensure that all nails are still in place, and everything is securely fastened to prevent any accidents or further damage.
Have a sprinkler system? Turn them on!
Perform a system check to ensure everything is functioning correctly. Be on the lookout for leaks or damaged sprinkler heads during the test. Make adjustments as needed to ensure your sprinklers are watering the grass and not the house, sidewalks, or porches.
